Bhutan, a land that is high on the ‘Happiness Index’, is also a land worth exploring for its breathtaking views, monasteries, museums and ancient ruins. Highlights

Trip will unfold as:

Day 1

Paro

Arrive at Paro Airport. The Cloud Itineraries representative escorts you to the pre-booked hotel for staying overnight. Later visit Kyichu Lhakhang, an important Himalayan Buddhist temple and the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong, a Buddhist monastery built in 1649.

Day 2

Paro

After breakfast at the hotel, visit Rinpung Dzong (Rinchen Pung Dzong) meaning Fortress on a Heap of Jewels and National Museum of Bhutan, a cultural museum built in 1968. The evening is free to explore the city or just relax at the hotel.

Day 3

Paro- Thimpu (50 kms/2 hrs)

In the morning drive to Thimpu and visit the 1629 built Simtokha Dzong (Sangak Zabdhon Phodrang); Memorial Chorten, a memorial stupa built in 1974 in the honour of the third king; the three-storied National Folk Heritage Museum; National Library of Bhutan, a fine example of traditional Bhutanese architecture. Later visit Motithang Takin Preserve, a wildlife reserve area for see the rare ‘takin’ national animal of Bhutan.

Day 4

Thimpu- Punakha (85 kms/3 hrs)

Leave for Punakha (3 hours) after breakfast and visit Punakha Dzong (also known as Pungtang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang meaning the palace of great happiness). Further proceed 20 minutes to Wangduephodrang and view the Dzong from outside and stroll around the market area.

Day 5

Punakha- Gangtey- Trongsa- Jakar (200 kms/7-8 hrs)

Drive to Jakar in the morning. Halt at Gangtey Gonpa, known, as the Gangtey Monastery is the main seat of Pema Lingpa tradition. En-route also visit the Trongsa Dzong. It is noted that southernmost part of the dzong, Chorten Lhakhang, is the location of the first hermitage, built in 1543.

Day 6

Jakar

Post breakfast explore the scenic Bumthang Valley, one of the most sacred valleys of Bhutan. Also visit Kurjey Lhakhang, a monastery in the Bumthang Valley, which is the final resting place of the remains of the first three kings of Bhutan, Tamshing and Kunchosum monastery. This sightseeing is short distance and more interesting when done on foot.

Day 7

Jakar

In the morning visit Jambay Lhakhang. The legend says that it is one of the 108 temples built by the Tibetan King Songtsen Goenpo in 659 AD on a single day. Later visit Jakar Dzong, built in 1667 and overlooks the Chokhor valley. The evening is free to explore the city more or relax at the hotel.

Day 8

Jakar- Ura- Mongar (170 kms/5-6 hrs)

Visit the village of Ura which has about 50 or so clusters of traditional homes with cobbled walkways, en-route to Mongar. The rest of the day is free after arriving Mongar.

Day 9

Mongar- Trashigang (65 kms/2-3 hrs)

Start your day with a visit to Mongar Dzong. It was established in 1930 to replace the original Shongar Dzong and is unusual because it has two main entrances. Later proceed to Tashigang, a town in eastern Bhutan. Visit Drametse, a Nyingma Monastery on your way.

Day 10

Trashigang

Morning proceed for an excursion to Trashi Yangtse and visit Duksum, Trashi Yangtse Dzong, a small yellow roofed temple Gom Kora and Chorten Kora, an 18th century stupa close to river Kulong Chu.

Day 11

Trashigang- Samdrup Jongkhar (180 kms/6 hrs)

Leave for Samdrup Jongkhar, oldest town located in the southeastern part of Bhutan and on the borders of Assam, India. Visit small villages en-route.

Day 12

Samdrup Jongkhar- Guwahati (100 kms/3 hrs)

In the morning after breakfast, drive to Guwahati. After arriving, head straight to the airport to board the onward flight.
